As tradition goes, Sant’Agata di Puglia, today awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club, was founded by the Lombards, but more accurate historical sources seem to attribute its birth to the Normans, who probably first settled the area around the castle built for the strategically important purpose of defending the territory. Although much contended by the Byzantines, who had built a tall tower here for military purposes, it subsequently passed under Angevin rule and the castle was further reinforced. A parish church was built in the XV century, while the castle was converted by several feudatories into a noble dwelling.
