Alberona was founded at the foot of Mount Stillo, surrounded by luxuriant vegetation and many water courses, at 732 asl. Initially settled by peoples from Calabria, it was subsequently sold by Count Conrad to the Knights Templar, until the Council of Vienna decided to suppressed that order and the settlement passed into the hands of the Knights of Malta. The artistic signature of the Knights Templar has marked Alberona forever, as we can still see in the Church of San Rocco, in the Great Prior’s tower and in the Mother church, where the relics of the church saint are kept (the bones of San Vitale and a small ampulla with his blood). The church of San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph) is also important for its fine Gothic portal and stone altar. The Arco dei Mille (Arch of the Thousand) offers a wide view and leads towards the monumental item of the Fontana Muta (mute fountain).
