Cagnano is located in the northern Gargano area within the Gargano Park, between Lesina and Carpino. Initially, it was a settlement of ancient Uria; for this reason, its name is linked to the name of the nearby lake Varano, while the name of the town seems to stem from the word “Ca-Iani”, which means “house of Janus”, the most venerated Pagan god in the area. Its recent origins date back to around the X century, in the Middle Ages, when it was a feud owned by several different noble families. Then, during Second World War, the Varano lake was used as a support base for submarines and seaplanes used in war operations in the Adriatic Sea. It is interesting to visit the remains of the “San Nicola Imbuti” water airport, which preserves very ancient architectural items. The nearby Varano Lake is a groundwater-fed basin known for its eel breeding activities.
