Castrignano del Capo

The municipality of Castrignano del Capo extends from Serra di Vereto to the Adriatic coast, and is very rich in history, culture and legends, as well as a spectacular nature: churches, castles, ancient villages, coastal towers, caves.
The pearl of the area is Marina of Leuca, with the Sanctuary of the Madonna de Finibus Terrae, at the point where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet. The menhir with a hat of Giuliano is the most ancient piece of evidence of the history of this area, and the only find of the kind in the province.

In Castrignano, ancient small town with its typical narrow streets, a visit to the Matrix Church, dedicated to the Archangel Michael, is a must. The church was entirely rebuilt after the 1743 earthquake and today preserves the important wooden statue of the Saint by the Neapolitan sculptor Nicola Fumo.
At Marina di Leuca, from the Greek word leuk, which means white, the little port is protected by the ancient Iapigium promontory with its little houses and sumptuous villas lining the seafront "delle Ville", alternating different styles ranging from Moorish to Pompeii, from Gothic to Art Nouveau. Each home corresponds to a characteristics “bagnarola”, a small sort of construction on the foreshore to allow swimming far from indiscreet glances. Near the lighthouse stands the Basilica or the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae, where the Mele Artistic Museum is also located.
Giuliano has a fine ancient portal in the historical town quarter, which is topped by the sixteenth-century castle with ramparts and moat, and the Church of St. John Chrysostomus. The coastline of the municipality of Castrignano is varied, with many caves that can be accessed from earth and sea, storing prehistoric treasures, Greek and Latin inscriptions. Do not miss Grotta Porcinara and Grotta del Diavolo (the Devil’s Cave).
