Andrano

Castello con laghetto, Andrano

Andrano is a coastal municipality with a marina of over 2 km that lies in the middle of a suggestive section of coast between that connects Otranto to Santa Maria of Leuca. There are not many sources of information concerning the origin of Andrano, but the settlement was probably started by Cretan peoples. The history of Andrano is linked to the events that occurred all around the castle, which became a luxurious noble house in the seventeenth century with the Caracciolo family.

Initially designed as a village surrounded by walls, the Spinola-Caracciolo castle consisted of an agglomeration of dwelling units, animal sheds, small church and sighting tower. Several families were added with the transformation of the group of houses into a fortified farm protected from the pirates’ assaults. The first architectural layout that characterised it as a castle dates back to the XV and XVI centuries, when the entire coastal and urban defence system was planned in Salento. In 1622 the castle was purchased by Alessandro Gallone, who changed its military function into a residential palace for the noble. The internal arcades were built in this period, as well as the Baroque balcony overlooking the square, the moulding of the windows and other façade and interior renovation works.
The sixteenth-century Dominican church guards the tomb of Antonio Saraceni, the Captain who took party in the battle to free Otranto from the Turks in 1481. The many festivals that are kept during the summer are attracting opportunities for a visit: the Sagra te la pitta culle ulie, a national art festival and the National Award “Foglia of Tabacco”.
