Oria

Oria

Oria, in the province of Brindisi, is located in the northernmost part of the Salento, halfway between Taranto and Brindisi, almost sought-after by the two seas which surround Apulia. A very important tourism center, the city boasts very ancient origins: according to Herodotus a group of Cretans from Minos founded Oria in 1200 BC, when they were shipwrecked on Ionian beaches during a storm and later moved to the highlands in the interior. The city was a Roman municipium and later under the Greeks, Longobards and Byzantines, becoming the theatre of many battles and undergoing sieges and attacks. At the beginning of the 13th century, the emperor Fredrick II declared the city state property and began massive fortification work which culminated with the construction of a castle in the highest part of the city. In 1572 the feud of Oria became the property of San Carlo Borromeo. Later a slow decline started which had the worst consequences in the historical part of the city which slowly fell into ruins. Subsequent restoration work brought the city back to its old splendour.

Visiting Oria means taking a trip through history, breathing the scent of myths and legends, understanding the way of living of a population which hade to defend itself from sieges and destruction over time by foreign armies. There are many historic, artistic and cultural sights to visit, including: The Swabian castle with its triangular form and three fortified towers, which majestically dominate the city, the rocky churches built following foreign invasions on the center of the city; the Basilica, dedicated to Maria Santissima Assunta in cielo, radically restored after the 1756 earthquake; Torre Palomba, also called Torre Carnara, built by the Messapi and part of a lager circle fortifying the city.
The Municipal library is also very interesting. Scholars from all of Italy come here to study the full collection of ancient texts and manuscripts. The Ethnographic Museum and Messapico Documentation Centre are also worth a visit.
Many traditions are tied to this land, including historical commemorations in costume, which attract tourists from all over Europe each year. The historical parade of Frederick II, which takes place the first Sunday of August, recalls the pomp of the imperial court and includes the participation of more than 400; the following Sunday the Torneo dei rioni (neighbourhood competition) is held, where knights representing the four city neighbourhoods challenge each other jousting for the ring and fighting with swords and iron bludgeons.
