The bell tower heralds the majestic presence of the Co-Cathedral of Ruvo di Puglia, the town's most important religious monument, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta.
Built between the 12th and the 13th centuries, the Cathedral combines the Gothic-Swabian style with elements of Puglia’s Romanesque architecture, and features a sloped façade, mullioned windows and a large Renaissance rose window. The three portals are framed by three false arches supported by columns, embellished with leafy decoration and anthropomorphic and zoomorphic motifs.
The Latin Cross interior, divided into two aisles and a nave, is a small treasure trove of art. It houses a significant collection of statues and the Cathedral’s precious treasure, which includes silver artefacts such as the statue of Saint Rocco, a monstrance and sacred vestments.
The cathedral’s hypogeum, which was only brought back to light during a restoration in the early 20th century, safeguards an important archeological patrimony, with tombs, paved floors and mosaics dating to the Peucetii, Roman, and Early Medieval eras.
The Co-Cathedral was built between the 12th and the 13th centuries by Robert II of Brassavilla, lord of Ruvo, after barbarian invasions had razed the city to the ground. Since then, it has been remade several times, most notably in the 17th century, when a dispute between the clergy and the Carafa family (the ruling lords of Ruvo at the time) resulted in the Cathedral's main altar being replaced by a noble throne. In the 1900s, everything that had been added during the Baroque era was eliminated in order to restore the church to its original form.
Constructed during a period of transition between the Apulian Romanesque and Gothic-Swabian styles, the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta has a splendid three-portal sloped façade, enhanced by an exquisite rose window. The central portal sits between two pillars, resting on column-bearing lions, surrounded by a plethora of small arches, niches, and bas-reliefs. The interior, with its Latin Cross plan, is divided into two aisles and a nave, each of which terminates with an apse.
Of particular interest is the rich collection of statues on the façade's cornices, much of which dates from the Angevin era.
