Tiggiano was founded on the Adriatic slope of Salento, 2 km away from the coast and 60 km from Lecce. The entire municipal territory extends for only 750 hectares and has deep roots in peasant culture. The foundation of Tiggiano dates back to the Medieval period, when the village, during the Angevin rule, served as a refuge for the peasants. In the first half of the XVII century, the Serafini-Sauli family bought the neighbourhood and the village of Tiggiano, to later obtain the title of Barons.
