Built between 1739 and 1742, the interior as well as the façade are decorated with outstanding baroque architectural and ornamental features. Because of its scenic impact, it must have been designed by some talented artist who, according to some scholars, came from the school of Domenico Antonio Vaccaro.
The unique, harmonious façade has a wavy pattern that is set off by the rich side scrolls of the drum and by the ornamentation of the cornice that surrounds the mixed-lined window. The interior, elliptic in shape, takes inspiration from one of the recurring motifs of baroque religious architecture: the central plan and the longitudinal layout blending into each other. The high altar hosts the miraculous statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, taken in procession by the congregation.
The belfry, rebuilt in 1833 and raised in 1954, is sturdily built and, although incomplete, it is slightly taller than the roof of the temple.
