Today, the baroque church of Saint Mary in Bethlehem, erected in 1738, was built over the site of an earlier church dating from 1528. The apsidal wall of the earlier sixteenth-century church, now the right apse, preserves the medieval image that after the plague in 1528 was called Santa Maria della Sanità.
