One of the most important churches in Galatina is the mother church dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul (the patron saints of the city), dating back to the mid-XIV century, in late baroque style and made of local stone. Extremely interesting are the frescoes on the vault, portraying scenes from the life of Saint Peter, 1875, alongside the magnificent altars in polychrome marble.
Extremely valuable is the altar of the ancient chapel of the Sacrament, dating from the late seventeenth century, where a white marble statue of the Virgin has been placed. Also noteworthy are the paintings in the church and in the vestry, with the 1756 “Washing of the feet”, Jesus walking on water and the Apparition of Christ to Saint Peter. The church contains the treasure of relics and vestments, altar cloth and holy vessels, a considerable gift made by mgr. Lorenzo Mongiò, bishop of Lanciano then bishop of Pozzuoli, to the Collegiate church of Galatina.
