In Strada del Carmine, in the old city, a few steps from the Cathedral of our Lady of the Assumption, stands the Church of the Carmine with its adjoining convent. The Church, with a plain rusticated ashlar-work façade and a portal with a baroque coat of arms on it, stands on the remains of the ancient little church of S. Angelo di Mammacara, mentioned in the sources since 1105. Of the ancient Byzantine building, as well as of a second one rising above it between the fifteenth and sixteenth century, a mosaic floor and some parts of the walls that have been unearthed during recent excavations are still visible. A late eighteen-century portal with a big coat of arms on it is all that remains of the convent, refurbished in 1965. Nowadays it houses a school run by the nuns of Ivrea. Even today the Opera Pia di Santa Maria del Carmine plays an important devotional role and has a substantial impact on the city centre because of its effective, influential educational and charity work.
