The church of San Pietro Apostolo - or St. Peter the Apostle - is the oldest in S. Pietro Vernotico. It was erected during the 17th century on an existing building of the Early Middle Ages, traces of which remain in the adjacent building used as a sacristy. The church as a single nave with a transept. The intersection of the longitudinal body with the arm of the transept features a cupola with a depressed calotte on an octagonal tambour. Inside the church visitors can admire paintings and Baroque stuccoes of great interest. Just as interesting are the frescoes of the cupola dedicated to the evangelists and paintings potraying the glorious apostles Peter and Paul. To the left of the building there was a well that provided miraculous water, according to popular believe, that cured the sting of tarantulas. The well was closed during the early 1900s.
