The origins of Manfredonia's Swabian Angevin Castle date to the 13th century, when it was built to protect the city. Today, it is a treasure trove of history, housing the rich collection of the Archeology Museum.

The building’s regular geometry reveals several characteristic elements of Swabian architecture, as well as details typical of other architectural styles. This mix reflects the various coming and goings of the town's ruling dynasties and dominant powers.

The Castle's close relationship with the surrounding territory is further sealed by the Museum's collection of archaeological artefacts. Consisting of all sorts of objects illustrating the history of the local Siponto and Gargano area.

  • Historical notes

The first documents to mention Manfredonia's Castle date to the time of Charles I of Anjou in the 13th century. However, it's possible that the castle was built before then by Manfredi, the son of Frederick II. The Aragonese transformed the castle in the second half of the 15th century, adding four cylindrical towers to improve its defenses against enemy attack.

  • Architecture

The Castle of Manfredonia displays a regular geometry typical of much Swabian architecture. In its original quadrangular form it was surrounded by a fortified wall with five towers. However, in the 15th century, the Aragonese modified it, reinforcing its defense capabilities by adding four cylindrical towers.

  • The Museum in the Castle

Inside the castle, you can flip through the pages of time at the National Museum of Archeology. The Museum's vast collection of relics, unearthed at numerous excavations, charts the history of the ancient lands of Siponto and Gargano. Exhibits include steles from the Daunia civilization, finds relating to the Siponto culture, and treasures recovered from the depths of the sea.
