Frederick II included Barletta Castle as one of the castles of the Terra di Bari (Land of Bari). Constructed by the Normans in the second half of the 12th century, the castle encapsulates the history of the city where, in the past centuries, the famous “disfida” (challenge) was held.

Over time, the city's ruling families have marked their passage with structural interventions that testify to the castle's central role. The Angevins transformed it from a manor house into a fortress, while the Aragonese Emperor Charles V further consolidated its defensive role.

Today the Castle stages events, exhibitions and shows, whilst its every corner conserves something of the fascination of history.

  • Historical notes

Of the important figures in the Castle's history, the Angevin Charles I of Naples played a leading role, commissioning the renowned French architect Pierre d'Angicourt to modify the building in the 13th century. Later, Charles V reinforced the quadrangular structure in the 16th century and added the King's coat of arms to the portal.

  • Architecture

Constructed to a quadrangular plan, Barletta Castle was built by the Swabians over an older Norman fortification. A consolidation process began in the late 13th century and continued through the 16th century with the addition of the bastions and a large moat. From the courtyard beyond the entrance, you can access the upper floors and the bastions where the cannons were kept, ready to be loaded and fired.
