Tricase

Tricase

Tricase is one of the centre of the so-called “Region of Salento Sierras” in the Santa Maria of Leuca Cape. Tricase was settled in 1030 by uniting three hamlets in order to create a single defence system to resist Saracen invasions and sacks. The first Lords of Tricase seem to have been Demetrio Micetti, Nasone de Galerato, Angelo de Cafalia and Goffredo de Lavena. Many feudatories followed: Orsini Del Balzo, Della Ratta, Ludovico Benavola, Pirro Castriota, Federico Pappacoda, Scipione Santabarbara and Stefano I Gallone, first Baron of Tricase. From the second half of the XVI century until the abolition of feudalism, Tricase had a very long period of political stability under Princes Gallone. The municipality has founded its economy on a massive production of tobacco.

The “musts” in the old town centre of Tricase are: the church of San Domenico, with its engraved altars; Gallone Palace, the Town Hall, founded as a fortress in the XIV century and later transformed into a princely residence. The Nativity and Beata Maria Vergine church was severely damaged by the Turks in 1480, by the soldiers of the Count of Lecce in 1495 and by the Venetians in 1528. Its valuable Baroque style and majestic size, with Latin cross-shaped interiors, is well lit with natural light by the 18 mixtilinear eyes and 4 small eyes in the cross. The Church of San Michele Arcangelo occupies a significant position in the historical and urban layout of the town. Take the road to Tricase Porto and you will see one of the oldest trees of Italy: the Quercia Vallonea, an oak dating back to the XIII century, also known as "100 Knights’ Oak", whose rarity in Italy has earned it the appellation of botanical monument. At Monte Orco, a living crib is organised every year for Christmas attracting visitors from all over the region.
